It was the spring of 2015 when we sent out the invitations for our summer wedding. My fiancé and I included song request cards to be returned to us with the RSVP cards from all of our guests. To our surprise, the number one most-requested song to be played during our reception was “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk The Moon. To be totally honest, we weren’t thrilled about the request. It was one of those songs that made us both immediately change the station whenever we heard it on the radio. We thought the title was ridiculous and that the song was kind of corny and silly. To say the least, neither of us were fans of the song and it certainly wasn’t one we really wanted on our wedding playlist. But what could we do?

The whole point of asking our guests for song requests was to make them happy. Even my mother requested that song, and there was no way I would’ve wanted to disappoint her. We wanted all of our guests to enjoy themselves as much as possible and to want to get up out of their seats and onto the dance floor! We envisioned everyone celebrating with us, dancing nonstop, and having a great time. Sure it was our wedding day and every decision was ultimately ours, but if we wanted our guests to have as good a time as we knew we would, then we had to respect their opinions. We decided to put our personal feelings about the song aside and added it to the playlist we were compiling for our DJ. We figured that whenever the song was actually played during the reception, we’d take that time to hit the photo booth or chat with some guests.

Well, honestly, we couldn’t have been more wrong. When “Shut Up and Dance” played at our reception, it was such a crowd pleaser. So many relatives and friends dashed out of their seats to join my wife and me on the dance floor. We were truly having the time of our lives and didn’t think about leaving that dance floor for even a second. We had a blast, flaunting not only our best, but also our silliest, dance moves. The energy, fun, and laughter were all contagious! And we’re so fortunate that both our photographer and our videographer captured the liveliness and the vitality everyone experienced when that song played. The expressions and smiles on our faces were priceless. Those few minutes on the dance floor, surrounded by our amazing family and friends, represented exactly what we wanted our entire wedding day to be—an exciting party and celebration of our love and commitment to each other. It was better than we had hoped for and more fun than we could have imagined!

A few months later, when it came time to select songs for our wedding video, without hesitation we immediately chose “Shut Up and Dance." It turns out that song had an unbelievable impact on our lives and will be forever memorable and meaningful to us. No matter where we are or what we’re doing when we hear “Shut Up and Dance,” we start dancing, clapping, waving our hands, and singing—traveling back in time to the best day of our lives—our wedding day! And now, we’d never dream of changing the station.
